Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a 2023 American action adventure film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote it with Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and David Koepp.

The film stars Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, and Karen Allen reprising their roles as Indiana Jones, Sallah, and Marion Ravenwood, respectively, from previous films. New cast members include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen. Set primarily in 1969, the film follows Indiana Jones and his estranged goddaughter Helena Shaw trying to locate a device that could change the course of history before Jürgen Voller, a Nazi-turned-NASA scientist, can take it for himself and change the outcome of World War II.

Dial of Destiny is the only film in the series that is neither directed by Steven Spielberg nor conceived by George Lucas, with both serving as executive producers instead. It is also the only film in the series not distributed by Paramount Pictures following Walt Disney Studios' acquisition of Lucasfilm and a deal between studios that transferred film rights for future sequels. Paramount retains the distribution rights to the first four films and a residual associate credit.

Plans for a fifth Indiana Jones film date back to the late 1970s, when Lucas and Spielberg negotiated with Paramount for four sequels to Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Lucas began researching potential plot devices for a fifth film in 2008, although the project stalled for years. Koepp was eventually hired to write the fifth film in 2016, with a release date set for 2019, although this was delayed several times due to rewrites and later the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2018, Jonathan Kasdan was hired to replace Koepp, who returned to write in 2019 before eventually leaving the project. Spielberg was set to direct, but stepped down in 2020, with Mangold taking his place. Filming began in June 2021 and took place in various locations including the United Kingdom, Italy, and Morocco, wrapping in February 2022. Longtime franchise composer John Williams returned to compose and conduct the film's score. With a reported production budget range of $250–400 million, it is the most expensive film in the Indiana Jones film series, as well as one of the most expensive films ever made.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny debuted out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 30, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film received lukewarm reviews from critics and was deemed a box office bomb, having grossed only $247 million worldwide.

In 1944, Nazis capture Indiana Jones and Oxford archeologist Basil Shaw, as they attempt to retrieve the Lance of Longinus at a castle in the French Alps. Astrophysicist Jürgen Voller informs his superiors that this Lance is fake, but he has found half of Archimedes' Dial, an Antikythera mechanism built by the ancient Syracusan mathematician Archimedes that reveals fissures in time, allowing for possible time travel. Jones escapes onto a train filled with looted antiquities and frees Basil. He obtains the Dial piece, and the two leap from the train just before Allied forces derail it.

👉In 1969, an elderly Jones, now living in New York City, retires from Hunter College. Marion has since left Jones and recently filed for divorce. It is revealed later that their son, Mutt, died in the Vietnam War, leaving Jones depressed, withdrawn, and alienated. Jones' goddaughter, Helena Shaw, unexpectedly visits him. Also an archeologist, she wishes to research the Dial, but Jones warns how her late father, Basil, nearly went insane attempting to unlock its secrets. Basil gave Jones the Dial to destroy it, which he never did.

As Jones and Helena retrieve the Dial-half from the college archives, Voller's henchmen attack them. Voller, now working for NASA under the alias "Dr. Schmidt", is assisted by the CIA. During the skirmish, Helena absconds with the Dial. Unknown to Jones, Helena smuggles antiquities and intends to auction the dial on the black market. Voller frames Jones for murdering two colleagues, forcing Jones to escape into a ticker-tape parade celebrating the Apollo 11 moon landing, then an anti-war protest and through the New York City Subway. Jones seeks out his old friend Sallah, now a cab driver, who helps him flee the country.

In Tangier, Jones prevents Helena from auctioning the Dial. Voller and his henchmen arrive and steal the artifact. Jones, Helena, and her teen sidekick, Teddy Kumar, join forces and chase them through the streets in a tuk-tuk. The CIA apprehends Voller after the U.S. government disavows him for going rogue and orders his murder, but his cohorts kill the agents and steal their helicopter.

Jones, Helena, and Teddy trail Voller to Greece and team up with Jones's old friend, Renaldo, a professional diver. They dive to an ancient shipwreck in the Aegean Sea and retrieve a "graphikos" tablet containing directions to the Dial's other half. Voller arrives soon after and kills Renaldo, and then chases Jones's group to Sicily.

Inside a labyrinthine cavern, Jones and Helena find Archimedes's tomb and the Dial's second half. They also discover Archimedes's skeleton holding a modern-day wristwatch. Voller captures Jones, wounding him. Reassembling the Dial, Voller plans to time travel back to 1939, assassinate Adolf Hitler, and lead Germany to victory in World War II. At an airfield, Voller activates the Dial to locate a time fissure and sets a flight path. Jones is held captive on Voller's plane, while Helena stows away through its landing gear. Teddy follows them in a stolen plane.

The time fissure actually leads to the Siege of Syracuse in 212 BC. The warring armies shoot down the plane, believing it is a dragon. Jones and Helena parachute out just before the plane crashes, killing all aboard; Teddy's plane lands safely. Archimedes finds Voller's body and wristwatch in the wreckage. He gives Jones the Dial but, fascinated with the watch, keeps it. Jones and Helena learn that Archimedes created the Dial solely to bring users from the future to 212 BC. As the time fissure begins collapsing, Helena insists on leaving. Jones wants to remain behind, feeling he has nothing to return to. Fearing Jones, who is wounded, will die or could alter history, Helena knocks him unconscious.

A recovering Jones awakens in his apartment and is reunited with Helena, Teddy, Sallah, and Marion. Jones and Marion reconcile.
